Scalp Micropigmentation FAQS

What i
s SMP?

Scalp Micropigmentation is a unique and innovative hair loss solution that tattoos ink (pigment) into the scalp with a needle or series of needles. The objective is to replicate the exact shape and size of a hair follicles by tattooing tiny particles of pigment into the scalp, giving the illusion of hair.

Scalp Micropigmentation is known by many names. SMP, Scalp Tattoo, Hair Tattoo, Medical Hairline Tattoo, Hair Micro Pigmentation Treatment and Medical Hairline Restoration as well. The names are different, but the treatment is the same.

How many sessions are needed to produce a desired result?

The process is labor-intensive and could take multiple sessions to meet the client’s needs, but for the majority of clients, it will take 3 sessions. The human body attacks the pigment and this is why the process often takes more than one session to produce a relatively stable result. Once the SMP session is complete, the pigment enters into the stabilization process and the liquid turns into a solid. Sessions will be from 10 days to 30 days apart to allow the scalp to completely heal before starting the next session.

How long does each session take?

The procedure takes approximately 3 to 5 hours each session depending on the extent of hair loss. Additional sessions might be required for scars and other skin conditions.

Benefits of SMP

There are several benefits of SMP depending on the client’s objectives:

  • Create or restore a hairline

  • Add the appearance of density to thinning hair

  • Create the illusion of a close-cropped hairstyle, also known as the  “buzz cut”

  • Scar concealment from hair transplantation

  • Camouflage burns or other skin conditions of the scalp

Who can SMP be performed on?

This hair loss solution can be performed on all people, of all colors and skin types.

Preparing For Your Consultation

One of the most important elements is qualifying a client to be a good candidate for Scalp Micropigmentation as a hair loss solution. This will be an ideal time for us to ask each other questions, discuss realistic goals and to ensure that this is the best solution for you. We will give our honest advice and information on pricing, sessions, application technique and color. To prepare for your SMP consultation, it is best to leave your hair as you wear it normally, or you may shave with a zero guard, but do not razor shave your head. We must be able to see your native hair to match the color for your SMP.

Please take time to look through the information that has been provided for you on this website. If you have a question that was not answered, write it down so you do not forget to ask. Give us more time to prepare and come up with ideas. It would beneficial and appreciated if you could send a few photos of the area(s) you are concerned with before our consultation, but not necessary. You can text them along with your name to 585.750.5293.

For those of you who are looking to get SMP for a receding hairline, please educate yourself on hairlines styles. Hairlines are the most difficult for the client to decide on and it’s not always the best choice to leave it up to your practitioner. Afterall you are the one who will be wearing it and we want you to be completely satisfied with your results. One of the most effective way to communicate to us on what your tastes are is to do your homework. Type in “Hairline styles” on the web search engine, select images on the menu bar and study the pictures. Print or save photos of the ones that you like. We can review them during your consult

You can also buy a makeup pencil and draw mock hairlines on yourself to test potential hairline positions and shapes on your scalp. Take photos of yourself and see how it looks on you. Taking these actions before your first SMP session will help ensure the best outcome. We look forward to meeting you soon!
